When the exhaust gas from an upgrade-biogas plant is converted to biomethane, the CO2 can and should be recovered for further use in applications such as greenhouse and food industries, or it can be further converted to biomethane through methanation or power to gas (P2G) technologies. This makes both ecological and economic sense, especially when CH4 emissions cost you money in the form of carbon credits.

Exhaust: How much is too much?

If the process is not managed correctly, methane will always enter the exhaust stream, and the resulting methane loss can be higher than the methane emissions from the CHP engine. If more than 2% of incoming methane is released into the atmosphere, then your greenhouse gas emissions will be equal to or higher than fossil fuel CO2 emissions. In fact, methane emission standards are usually much stricter. In the exhaust gas not treated by RTO or other forms of methane removal process, the content of CO2 is usually more than 95%, CH4 is about 1%, and the rest is usually nitrogen, trace oxygen and water vapor.

To reduce CH4 emissions, online process monitoring can be used to carefully adjust the upgrade process, and the MGP262 is the ideal tool to achieve this goal.
